New laws and regulations have been in effect since March 15, 2012. Summarizing these laws, they basically state that any home owner with a pool pump over 3/4 horse power or .99 total horse power is acceptable. Anything 1 horse power and over, when being replaced, needs to be dual speed or a variable speed motor/pump.
